The challenge

The Amtrak Downeaster runs five daily round trips between Brunswick, Maine and Boston, carrying nearly 600,000 passengers a year and serving as a lifeline for commuters, tourists, and students across New England. It was the first Amtrak service in the country to offer free Wi-Fi and e-ticketing. Its website needed to match that spirit of innovation.

The challenge was to build a fast, accessible, easy-to-navigate WordPress site that served the Downeaster’s diverse ridership — from daily commuters checking schedules to families planning a first trip to Maine — within the brand standards and technical constraints of a public transportation authority.

Our approach

Autumn Lane AI provided WordPress development services for the Amtrak Downeaster site, building to specification within the organisation’s established design system. The build was engineered for accessibility, reliability, and ease of use across the full range of the Downeaster’s audience.

Performance and content structure were prioritised to ensure that schedule information, fares, and station details were findable quickly — particularly on mobile, where many riders check the site on the go.

The Result

The updated Downeaster website gives one of New England’s most beloved transit services a digital platform as reliable as the trains themselves.

architecture, strong mobile performance, and accessible design support the organisation’s mission to make car-free travel in Maine and New England easy and appealing.
